Local Vehicle Management System (LVMS)

Based on Zigbee's local networking functions, a Local Vehicle Management System (LVMS) allows users to manage a vehicle fleet in a local area network. As an add-on equipment, a GPS module is connected to Zigbee device. A central control system can display real time locations of each device. Usually, the system monitors the objects within the range of communication of 100m to 1km. However, users may set the alarm to trigger a warning at the event such as off range or disconnection.

System Description

1. Application Software
A Windows based application software provides:
• Unit Register function lets users to register a Zigbee units as a legal component in the system. The function will automatically detect the units connected to the system, and guide users to sign the units up into the system. Only registered units can be displayed and managed by the system.
• Network Construction function is one of the most unique features that ASMS provides. With Zigbee's network construction abilities, the system forms a star or a tree network automatically or as users specified. Versalinks Proprietary 802.15.4 based networking software enables Versa Router devices to manage the network communication and traffic routing efficiently.
• Monitor and Alarm function monitors devices' real time location, and displays devices on GIS map. The s ystem offers historical playback features. Users can define the alarm events such as geo-fence, off range, driving speed or distance. A basic text message feature equipped with message display is available to support communication in the fleet.
• GIS Map is another unique feature which ASMS offers to our users. Users may load either GIS map data or other layout map data. The system features complete map navigation functions. Users may easily navigate the map.

2. Hardware Devices
• Coordinator is a central controller which manages communication from routers or terminals, and coordinates network ttraffic.
• Router is a network transmitter, and acts as a relay between Routers, Coordinators and Terminals.
• Terminal is a light device. It usually acts as a mobile monitor with battery powered.

• GPS add-on device which is connected to either a router or a terminal via serial port.

Support
• Users need to load a local GIS map data into system. Currently the system supports ESRI shp format, MapI nfo format.
• The system needs to register all devices before they can be connected . Users may set some basic settings after registering and the system will only monitor those registered devices.
• When coordinator is on, the system will automatically detect registered devices and display the network topology. If the system has GIS map data loaded, users may place or locate the devices at a proper position on the map.
• The real time feedback data is displayed on the screen. Based on the alarm set, the system will set off the alarm event.

Applications:
• A Fleet Management of Long Distance Transportation;
• Military Vehicle Fleet Management;
• Forest Firemen Tracking and Monitoring;
• Outdoor Adventure.

System Features
• Network easily built, scalable and extendable;
• Low start-up cost, using 2.4G free communication frequency;
• Low power consumption, using AA batteries on mobile terminal devices;
• Reliable and stable for network communicating.
